Question of Sport event raises £33,000 for Rennie Grove

Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s A Question of Sport fundraiser has raised an impressive £33,000 – enough to pay for a specialist nurse for one year.

The event, held on February 5 at Sopwell House Hotel in St Albans, saw 27 teams battle it out in a sports quiz hosted by Sky Sports reporter Geoff Shreeves.

Guests also feasted on a three-course meal before taking part in a penalty competition, auction and raffle. There was also a silent auction which raised around £7,000.

During the main auction a ferocious bidding war led to a five course tasting menu for six people, provided by chef Phil Thompson of Thompson@Darcy’s, reaching £2,000 and Mr Thompson agreeing to provide two lots.

Colin Ivey, Corporate Fundraising Manager at Rennie Grove, who organised the event, said: “It was a fantastic evening that exceeded our expectations in every way. The food was outstanding, the quiz was great fun and the end result of raising £33,000 was phenomenal.

"All the money raised will help support the services the charity offers to local people in the community who are suffering from cancer and other life-limiting illness. I would like to thank everyone who attended and also everyone who volunteered on the evening."

The winning team was made up of players from Collinson Hall and DLA Town Planning.

Plans are now underway to hold the event again next year with 23 tables already reserved.
