Poetry Competition to help remember loved ones

The Bucks Free Press and Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, part of Rennie Grove Hospice Care, have joined forces to launch a special poetry competition for school pupils as part of a new memorial event.

On Saturday 9 May the charity is holding a community family afternoon at Downley Memorial woodland to enable people to remember loved ones who have died.

In the run up to the event budding poets will be able to enter the competition, which has the theme of loss and memory. Entries will be judged in two age groups, Year One-Six and Year Seven to 12. The winners will have their entry read out on the day and it will also be published in the Bucks Free Press. They will receive A £10 Waterstones book voucher and two books plus £75 worth of books for their school. All poems entered into the competition will also be included in a booklet that will be available on the day.

During the afternoon, which starts at midday, people will be able to make a donation to pledge a bluebell in remembrance, follow the nature trail around the wood and enjoy a picnic and family friendly activities including cricket, face painting and henna tattoos. There will also be dedications from The Mayor of High Wycombe, Jenny Provin, Chief Executive of Rennie Grove and faith leaders.

The woodland, which can be found just off of Plomer Hill in Downley, was planted in 1995 and has hundreds of trees that have all been planted as a memorial to someone.

Penny Crosswell, Community Fundraising Manager at Rennie Grove, said: "We’d like to invite people from all sections of the community to come along to celebrate the memories of friends and family members. There will also be the opportunity to find out more about what Rennie Grove does as an organisation and to enjoy the lovely woodland hidden away in this busy suburb of High Wycombe.

"We hope that people attending will come along with a picnic and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you there."

To enter the poetry competition simply email your poem along with your name, age, school and year, address and a daytime telephone number to community@renniegrove.org or post it to: Poetry Competition, Community Team, Rennie Grove Hospice Care, Unit 3, Icknield Way Industrial Estate, Tring, Bucks, HP23 4JX. The closing date for entry is Thursday 16 April.
