To help celebrate a new taxi rank that is set to open in Harpenden members of St Albans and Harpenden Taxi Association will donate 20p from every fare for two weeks.
For the last two years taxi drivers have been battling to have a rank installed in Harpenden’s town centre. One is now due to be opened on May 11 at midday by the mayor.
To celebrate taxi drivers in the area decided they wanted to do something for charity and chose Rennie Grove Hospice Care to benefit.
Musassar Yasin, General Secretary of St Albans and Harpenden Taxi Association, said: “We want to show our appreciation for all the support we have had over the last two years from members of the public and the town council as we have battled to have a taxi rank installed. To show our appreciation we wanted to give to a local charity, and Rennie Grove Hospice Care is right at the heart of the community, so it was an obvious choice.
“For two weeks from the opening of the new rank on May 11 all 247 members of our association will be encouraged to give 20p for each fare they take. We will also be giving passengers the opportunity to make a donation too.”
Nicola MacKinnon, Community Fundraising Manager at Rennie Grove, said: “We are delighted that Rennie Grove will benefit from this fantastic fundraiser and would like to thank Mr Yasin and all the taxi drivers in the area for choosing us. This initiative has potential to raise thousands of pounds which will really help to make a difference to people suffering from cancer and other life-limiting illness in the community.”
