To help mark Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s 30 years of caring the charity has organised a Cycle Challenge from St Albans to the Isle of Wight…and back.
Captained by Graham Poll, former FIFA referee and a Patron of Rennie Grove, the challenge, which takes place between 17 and 20 September 2015, will comprise of a four day ride from St Albans/Tring to the South Coast and back again. The route will take riders through Southampton, the Isle of Wight and Newbury.
Graham, who lives in Tring, says: “I took up cycling a few years ago as I can’t run anymore due to a bad back. Last year I cycled Land’s End to John O’Groats and really enjoyed it. This challenge raised lots of money so I thought it would be a good idea to do something else this year. The route is around 300 miles so is comfortably doable in four days and should also be fun.
“When I stopped professional refereeing I knew I wanted to support a local charity and Rennie Grove does amazing work locally so it was an obvious choice. I think everyone in the local area knows someone who has been touched by the charity and that we should all do something to support it.”
Graham will be joined on the challenge by Rennie Grove’s Corporate Fundraising Manager Colin Ivey. He said: “Cyclists can join as individuals or enter a team, complete the whole course or treat it as a relay undertaking a day each.
“The aim is for the team to fundraise £30,000 in recognition of 30 years of caring. This should be a really fun challenge that I am looking forward to taking part in.”
The route plan:
17 September - St Albans/Tring to Isle of Wight
18 September - Isle of Wight Circuit
19 September - Isle of Wight to Swindon area via Newbury
20 September - Swindon area to St Albans
Rennie Grove is asking all entrants to pay their own costs of the trip; additionally, every rider should be targeting a minimum sponsorship of £1,500 each.
The cost of the Challenge will be £325 for the full four days including three nights accommodation, all food, technical support, ferry crossings and celebratory reception on return.
