Summer Appeal 2017 - Before I Go

This summer we are launching an appeal from one of our hospice at home patients.  Mum and grandmother, Linda, was diagnosed with cancer some years ago and now her condition has sadly become terminal.

She hopes her story will inspire people to give £25 to fund an hour-long nursing visit to a patient’s home “to care for others in my community after I am gone”.

Linda’s story

“I first met Rennie Grove nurse, Jenny, in June 2015 when I was told my diagnosis had become ‘terminal’. Jenny was the one who sat, patiently, and helped me to plan where and how I am going to die.  It’s so reassuring to have the nurses’ support… it will be them I call on to relieve my pain and to support me on the journey towards the calm and peaceful death I hope for.”

This spirited 71-year-old has many things she is determined to achieve despite her prognosis. Read more about Linda's inspirational story here.

Jenny’s story

Jenny is one of the Hospice at Home nurses who has been caring for Linda.

“I first met Linda two years ago when she was referred to us by her local hospital.  Her positivity, her absolute refusal to be down about her life - or her condition - remains utterly inspirational.  Linda is able to face the reality of her life coming to an end, but many cannot. I’m here to help them and their loved ones achieve the most they possibly can, by assessing and managing their symptoms, checking and administering their medication and making sure they have the specialist equipment they need to be as comfortable as possible.

“But I’m also there to help them and their families in a wider sense. Because I can take time with each of my patients I can make sure they have the opportunity to voice their hopes and fears.  Crucially, I can be the one that starts the all-important conversations about the process of dying, about the funeral – things that family members understandably find very difficult.”

Linda’s last wish

Before I go, there’s one really special thing I want to do for Jenny and for Rennie Grove as well.  I would like to help them raise enough money to allow Jenny and her nursing colleagues to care for others in my community after I’m gone. I know only too well the value of that care. So may I please ask you to join me today in making a donation to Rennie Grove Hospice Care?”

The difference your donation could make

  • £25 to pay for one hour of Hospice at Home care for someone like Linda
  • £50 to pay for a nurse like Jenny to hold an initial two-hour holistic assessment visit with a patient
  • £187.50 to pay for a full nursing shift from the Hospice at Home team

The costs above are based on average nursing costs. Actual nursing costs can vary depending on shift patterns and salary bands.

Thank you so much for your support.
