Local charity Rennie Grove Hospice Care has launched its annual sponsored triathlon challenge for all existing and budding athletes and as an extra test for those who like to run and cycle, this year there is a brand new duathlon option. The RAF Halton Triathlon and Duathlon will take place on Sunday 1 May at RAF Halthon near Wendover in Bucks and is organised jointly by RAF Halton and Rennie Grove Hospice Care. This year participants will be able to choose from three options with each promising to be a physical test of endurance, strength and stamina. The new Duathlon option will start with a 5km run followed by a 23km cycle and finish with another 5km run. The extremely popular Mini Olympic distance, introduced for the first time last year, will consist of a 600m pool swim, a 34.5km cycle route followed by a 5km run to the finish line and a well-earned rest. If that sounds too challenging, the final option is the original Super Sprint which involves a 300m swim, a 23km cycle and a 5km run. This popular event has sold out for two years running and with over half the places already filled for the gruelling Mini Olympic option within days of opening registration, those wishing to take part are advised to book early as places are strictly limited. Gillian Barnett, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Rennie Grove Hospice Care said: “ Although this is a test for our triathletes, it is very achievable and we have plenty of people who are taking on the challenge of a triathlon or duathlon for the first time. I’m sure the extra motivation provided by knowing that the sponsorship money they raise will help local families facing the very different challenges of cancer or other life-limiting illness will help everyone push on and reach the finish line. It will be a challenging but enjoyable day for all.”
Prices for each option vary with individual entry costing £45 for the Mini Olympic, £40, for the Super Sprint and £40 for the Duathlon. For those taking part as a team, entry for three people for the Mini Olympic is £120 and for the Super Sprint is £105. There is no team option for the Duathlon.
Entry fees covers the cost of putting on the event and include a bespoke medal at the finish line, use of an event-branded selfie frame for on the day photos, water at transition points, full route signage and marshalling. Refreshments will be available to purchase on the day and post-event massages will be on offer in return for donations to Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
All money raised from the RAF Halton Triathlon and Duathlon will help fund the services offered by Rennie Grove Hospice Care to help give local patients diagnosed with life-limiting illness the choice to be cared for at home surrounded by their families.
