Volunteer counsellors sought

65As the demand for its care evolves, Rennie Grove Hospice Care is recruiting volunteers to work with its nurses and Family Support Team to meet the changing needs of its patients and their families.

Medical advances mean patients are living longer, often with multiple and complex life-limiting conditions.  This creates, not just an increased demand for nursing care and coping strategies for the patient, but also a need for additional support for their family.

Rennie Grove Director of Nursing & Clinical Services, Sue Varvel, explained: “We’re also finding that earlier diagnosis and improvements in treatment mean that patients have a greater need for counselling.  Put bluntly, they have more time to adjust to their diagnosis, and, regardless of their prognosis, this can generate a huge number of emotional and often spiritual questions and concerns that need addressing alongside their physical care.”

Consequently, the charity is seeking qualified counsellors with at least 2 years’ counselling experience in a fully-trained capacity who would be willing to donate a few hours of their time each week to complement the support already offered by the charity’s clinicians.  Sue added: “We’re very fortunate to have a team of volunteer counsellors – including Client-Centered Counsellors, Family Therapists and Psychotherapists - based at Grove House in St Albans.  Now we want to expand this team and replicate this successful model of support in Bucks.”

Volunteer Counsellors provide support to patients, carers, family members and close friends from diagnosis, during treatment and through bereavement. This may involve one-to-one support in the client’s home; over the telephone; in nursing /care homes or at Grove House.

The ideal candidate would have level 4 Counselling Qualification Membership and/or accreditation of a counselling body such as the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).  Rennie Grove would provide training workshops and fortnightly group supervision for all successful volunteers.  To read full details of the role visit www.renniegrove.org/volunteer.  To register your interest, email volunteer@renniegrove.org or call 01494 877200
