Rich rewards for charity Treasurer

Retiring charity Treasurer, Chris Langford, has outlined how rewarding he has found thisChris Langford volunteer role for Rennie Grove Hospice Care over the last 25 years.  As the charity seeks a new Treasurer, Chris is keen to highlight the personal satisfaction and immense pride he feels at being involved in an organisation providing a vital service for adults and children in the local community.

When Chris first joined the charity, then known as Iain Rennie Hospice at Home, it was to roll his sleeves up and help complete the books.  Now the nature of his role is markedly different.  Chris, a qualified accountant, explains:

“Today the role of Treasurer is much more strategic.  All the hard work is done by the very professional team in the Finance Department and my role revolves around supporting, advising and providing challenge.  I meet with the Finance Director regularly and we talk on the phone on a weekly basis.  This helps ensure that when I attend Finance or main Board meetings, I am familiar with and confident in the information that is presented.

“It is such an exciting time for Rennie Grove. Since its inception 31 years ago the charity has evolved a model of 24/7 responsive hospice at home care that is the envy of many.  The fantastic care given by the nurses and Family Support team has always been centred on helping keep patient and family together at home and I always get a boost when people say what wonderful care they have received. Now, as the national agenda is hailing community-based care as the way forward, we have a clinical model that is relevant and really works in practice.  

“Managing the budget of £7-8 million every year in order to provide the service is a challenge as money from the Government is so restricted, but it is ultimately highly rewarding when we succeed and are able to continue to deliver a high quality service.  The governance of Rennie Grove is slick and professional and I would definitely encourage those with the right skills and senior business experience to consider becoming Treasurer.

“During my years in the role I have been privileged to work with many enthusiastic and committed people and I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement.  Over and above being Treasurer, my deeply personal commitment to the cause has drawn me to help with raising funds, organising ten hugely successful Annual Sports Dinners in Tring and latterly a series of concerts in St Albans Cathedral. This has enabled me to meet other supporters and get to know a large number of like-minded people seeking to support this vital community service. 

“The challenge for all Trustees now is to provide strategic guidance and support to ensure that Rennie Grove is able to expand the service to meet the needs of an increasing number of people.  There is now a really exciting opportunity for a new Treasurer to get involved and make a big difference in the local community and I would highly recommend the role.”
