Cheryl Gillan MP helped to raise awareness of the crucial contribution made by volunteers when she joined the ranks of Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s dedicated volunteer team in national Volunteers’ Week earlier this month.
The newly re-elected Member of Parliament for Chesham and Amersham spent a morning volunteering at the charity’s Chalfont St Peter shop on The Broadway.
Cheryl, who is a Patron of Rennie Grove and officially opened its Chalfont St Peter shop nearly two years ago, was pleased to return to the store, saying: “I admire the work done by Rennie Grove; they make a significant contribution to our community. It is a great pleasure to work in the Chalfont St Peter shop as part of Volunteers’ Week and to do my bit for the charity.
“Volunteering is something everyone can do, no matter how busy or full their lives are. Thank you to the people who do volunteer to help our charities. It really does make for a better society and community.”
Assistant Manager, Karen Russell, was delighted to welcome Cheryl to the shop on 2 June, saying: “Cheryl worked on the till from 9am till 1pm, serving and chatting with customers and interacting with our volunteers. It was great to have such a high profile person with us to mark Volunteers’ Week and acknowledge the huge difference volunteers make to the retail team and the charity as a whole.”
Around 1,500 volunteers support Rennie Grove’s unique 24/7 service in the local community, saving the charity more than £1.5 million each year and enabling its nurses and family support team to help thousands of local families affected by cancer and other life-limiting illness. The charity was delighted that their dedication was officially acknowledged this month when they became recipients of the prestigious Queen’s Award – the MBE for community groups.
Shop manager Carole, her deputy Karen and their dedicated team of volunteers are always keen to hear from new recruits. If you can spare a few hours each week, would like to meet new people, learn new skills and make a difference in your local community, pop into the shop or contact the Volunteer Services Team on 01442 90222 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
