Inspired by the quality of care received by two family members at the end of their lives, local couple Laura Pitt and Phil Macken are hosting a Butterfly Ball to raise funds for the charity that looked after their relatives - Rennie Grove Hospice Care.
Phil explains: “In April 2016, my mum Mary, landlady of the Hit or Miss Inn in Penn Street, lost her battle with cancer after a four and a half year fight. It had started as breast cancer then spread to her lungs and the rest of her body. Just before she died she was in hospital for a week then returned home to receive end of life care from Rennie Grove Hospice Care nurses.
“The nurses provided care and support that meant that Mum was as comfortable as possible in her final few days. Their support gave us, as a family, comfort too. Sometime later I contacted Rennie Grove to ask about additional family support and they organised for me to have a trained listener come to my home so I could discuss my thoughts and concerns. I met with a volunteer once a month for 6 months who really helped me to deal with my grief.
“My fiancée Laura’s grandfather died just six weeks after my mum died and he also had been cared for and supported by Rennie Grove nurses in his final few months.
“We feel so strongly about the invaluable help that Rennie Grove’s nurses and staff give to patients and their families that we wanted to do something positive and help make a difference to other families’ lives. That’s why we are hosting the Butterfly Ball to raise funds for this important local charity.”
The Butterfly Ball is taking place on Saturday 24 March at Wycombe Swan Town Hall, from 7pm to midnight.
Included in the ticket price is a three course meal and entertainment courtesy of professional stand-up comedian Gerry K with live music from Dirty Mavis, a Buckinghamshire-based covers band whose infectious fun-loving attitude never fails to get people up dancing. There will also be an auction and raffle.
Tickets are priced at £50 each with a 10% discount for those booking a table for 10 guests, at £450.
