There’s nothing half-hearted about High Wycombe’s Dave Hilling who took part in London’s newest run - The Big Half - on Sunday 4 March 2018.
The Big Half is part of a new, one-day festival centred round the half marathon distance, which aims to be a celebration of the cultural diversity of the city of London.
Dave used the Big Half as a means of raising funds for Rennie Grove Hospice Care whose nursing team looked after his Dad, Arthur, in his final days.
And Dave also celebrated his own “big half” as it was his 50th birthday a few days after the run!
Dave said, “My Dad was a much-loved World War 2 veteran who was well known in Holmer Green, the village where he lived and where my Mum, Pamela, still lives. The support we all received from the Rennie Grove team was truly unbelievable
“At the end of last summer, my wife Joanne decided to enter us both into The Big Half. Her aim was to bring about a drastic change to my work/home life balance, to improve our health and to raise money for Rennie Grove, the charity who helped to make Dad's final months, days and hours as good as they could be.
“I haven't been "fit" since I was 18. A few days after running The Big Half I will be 50. This is my marathon. I now know that when you lose someone you love there is little you can do other than something positive to make a difference for others. So I'm doing this in memory of my Dad, forever an inspiration, forever the loving, courageous Dad.
“I’ve been blown away by the generosity of family, friends, work colleagues, parents of the under 8s football team that I’m involved with – just everyone – who have all sponsored me. I’ve already exceeded my target and am aiming to raise as much money as I possibly can for Rennie Grove.”
Gillian Barnett, Director of Marketing and Fundraising said: “It is thanks to our generous supporters who raise funds for Rennie Grove that we can continue to provide care to patients like Dave’s Dad, Arthur. We would also like to wish Dave a very happy birthday!”
