Family members who have been associated with the care provided by Rennie Grove were invited to spend some respite time together at the Amersham Community Centre on Sunday 1 July.
Local music enthusiasts Umbanda kick-started the day with a blood-pumping drumming workshop that had family members of all ages engaged and beaming as they beat their bongos to the rhythms.
The broad range of activities provided a spectrum of emotional outlets for everyone; from calming bird house painting and the therapeutic constructing of coloured sand jars, to massage therapy and relaxation guidance provided by the experts at Relax Kids.
Anne-Laure Crouy, mother of three and wife to Rennie Grove patient Florent bought the entire family along for an opportunity to relax and enjoy time together. Speaking about the day, Anne-Laure said: “The bird houses we painted are already up in the tree at home. Thank you Karen and all the helpers for the absolutely amazing day we had. It was really relaxing and playful and joyful. The children had an awesome time. We thank all the Rennie Grove team very much!”
Rennie Grove provides support for the whole family when they are directly impacted by our care. The Family Support team provide support to help patients, carers, family members, children or close friends cope when a diagnosis of a life-limiting illness is received.
Family Support team member Karen Neill, who organised the Time for You day, said: “Our family activity day was a great success and enabled four of our families (10 children and 5 adults) who we support to all come together on a sunny day to enjoy a variety of activities whilst knowing that they are all going through similar experiences. The drumming workshop provided a great release of tension as well as being such fun and helped the group to gel. The craft activities provided a mix of creative, contemplative and calming moments whilst the ‘Relax Kids’ mindfulness workshops offered a haven of calm for all.
“It was lovely to all get together outside to share a family picnic and release more tension in the playground if necessary!
“Following such positive feedback. We hope to be able to offer similar Family Events next year to more of our families.”
