Moonlight Walk - a night to remember

The Moonlight Walk around St Albans takes place on Saturday 15 September 2018. The 10 mile route promises ‘a night to remember’ and is the perfect way to celebrate the lives of loved ones.

The route starts and finishes at Westminster Lodge in Holywell Hill and includes a visit to the grounds of Grove House, adjacent to St Albans City Hospital, where there is an opportunity to place a padlock on a memory fence as a symbol of remembrance.

Clodagh and John

Clodagh Kellett, her family and friends will be walking for a third time; Clodagh explains why the Moonlight Walk is so important to them.

“On Saturday night, September 8 2016, my husband John grinned at me smugly from the couch and said "cheerio" and raised his glass of Shiraz as I swished regretfully toward the front door in my waterproofs. “You’re mad" said my daughter Shona as I stepped out into the rain. She has a point I think as I pull into Westminster Lodge car park. However as I join the group - all here to support a friend who has lost a loved one to cancer – and meet the masses of other walkers, we are all infected with a sense of unity and fun, ready to take on Rennie Grove’s Moonlight Walk!

“Saturday night, September 23 2017, the kids and I are in Westminster Lodge for the Moonlight Walk surrounded by family and friends. It looks similar, only this time there is no John waving me off, this time the children and I are among those who have lost a loved one. John had died just a month earlier. He’d been diagnosed with metastatic oesophageal cancer in January and his health deteriorated through the year. Thanks to Rennie Grove nurses, John came out of hospital and spent his last day at home before he died peacefully in the arms of his family.

“On Saturday night, September 15 2018 we will be at the Moonlight Walk again, walking in John’s memory and in infinite gratitude to Rennie Grove that we were able to fulfil his last wish, to die at home. The care that Rennie Grove provided was priceless and they have continued to be there for us with advice on practical issues and bereavement support.

“So we will walk again this year, hoping to raise more money to ensure that Rennie Grove can continue to help people at their end of their lives and their families. Please visit our Just Giving page and help us raise funds.”
