“I really loved coming to the Day Hospice; I would look forward my visits each week, but now Grove House comes to me."
Joe (92) had been attending the Day Hospice at Grove House, but gradually found getting out of the house more difficult. Living with his daughter, Jane and her husband in their family home, he was then visited once a week by a Grove House at Home Volunteer.
Joe explained: “I really loved coming to the Day Hospice; I would look forward my visits each week, but now Grove House comes to me. My muscles aren’t what they used to be and getting out of the house can be difficult so I now have my own Grove House visitor to look forward to every Thursday.”
One of the volunteers in the Grove House at Home Team described how much she enjoyed visiting Joe at home: “I so enjoy my visits to Joe, he is a lovely man and we have some really interesting conversations. Joe is originally from Scotland, but has spent most of his life in this area, during his working life he was an engineer and worked for Baker Perkins and in his spare time Joe was a keen golfer – with a handicap of just eight, he has played courses all over the world.
“I volunteered to help with home visiting as I love meeting new people and I love to chat! Everyone is interesting and invariably we soon discover something we have in common. All my visits are different: with Joe we sit and chat, but for other patients I might help with a little light housework or ironing. It’s also a chance to give the patient's regular carer a bit of a break.”
