The event will be taking place at Merchant Taylors' Lake, Hertfordshire on Saturday 15 May 2021. The beautiful fresh water lake is an ideal venue for seasoned swimmers or those that have always wanted to give it a go.

The event offers 3 different challenges: an untimed 400 metre family swim perfect for adults and children; a 400 metre timed swim and a 1,500 metre timed swim for those who really want to challenge themselves.

Very few charities host their own open water swim events, with most opting to take charity places in larger events such as Swim Serpentine and the Great North Swim. This is a unique opportunity to do something different and exciting on your doorstep.

Do I need to raise sponsorship?

Your sponsorship money helps us to provide end-of-life care to local patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and their families. Because of the pandemic, we're caring for more patients than ever, as many as 600 at any one time, in fact. Those patients need us, and we need you to help fund their care. As little as £57.00 could pay for 2 hours worth of care for a patient.

Please consider raising sponsorship to support our services. If you raise money via Justgiving, this will come directly to us. You can set up your own Justgiving page here, send it round to your friends, family and work colleagues - let them know what you're doing and why and see how much you raise!

Open Water Swim event FAQs

  • Is there car parking available?

Yes. Please follow the signs to the lake on arrival at Merchants Taylors School.
  • Where do I go when I arrive?

Please head over to the registration table on arrival and to collect your timing chip
  • Are there changing facilities at the lake?

Yes, there are 1 male and 1 female changing tent. As these facilities are limited, all swimmers are advised to arrive ready to swim - in their swim suits - and then you'll only need to change after your swim.

  • Are there toilets at the lake?

    Yes
  • Will the event be timed?

Yes - the 400m and 1500m timed swims. Your timing chips will be handed out at registration. These will be on an ankle strap. There is a mat at the entrance to the lake, which will record your time going in and then once you exit the lake. After your swim, please make sure you return the ankle strap to the box.
  • Where can I find my results?

After each timed event, the results will go "live" immediately and can be accessed here
  • Can I hire a wetsuit at the lake?

Unfortunately, due to current covid restrictions, there is no facility to hire wetsuits at the lake.
  • How does the open swim event work?

All open water swim participants can come in and out of the water as you please during your time slot. Please familiarise yourself with the lake plan at registration. You will see there is a 100m loop for anyone who is looking to build their confidence.
  • Is there water safety cover at the lake

Active Training manage the water safety for all events at the lake. Their staff will look after you at registration and explain the timing chip system to you. Their staff will also be in kayaks on the water.
  • What time should I arrive for my timed swim?

We are asking our swimmers to arrive ready to swim.
If you wish to warm up, there will be time for you to swim a warm up lap before the timed event.
Timed swimmers are asked to arrive at 2.30pm for the 400m timed swim and 3pm for the 1500m timed swim.
Swimmers will then be set off 1 by 1 for their event.
  • Can my family and friends come along to support me?

Yes of course, the more the merrier. There is a space alongside the lake for spectators and there will be a drinks facility at the lake if family wish to purchase any warm drinks.
